A breastfeeding mother’s injustice at the airport

Breastfeeding a child can have it’s challenges. Traveling by air should not be one of them. However, that’s exactly what happen to Katie Champ when went through security at Sky Harbor airport with bags of pumped breastmilk. This is her story of what happened as shared on her Facebook page on Oct 3rd 2014:
Birth and breastfeeding mom friends, I need your help. I am very familiar with the rules for TSA and flying with Breastmilk as I have done it many times with no issue. I just went through security at Phoenix airport and was harassed to no end. I was forced to have all my bags torn apart and searched, I was body searched in great detail in public including being required to lift up part of my shirt (tank top) in public, they continued to tell me that the treatment I was getting was standard because I brought Breastmilk with me, told me they didn’t care how long it took or if I missed my flight because it was my fault that I choose to bring breastmilk on the plane. They did not follow policy at all. Who can I file a complaint with? How can I make his public so word gets out? I have been crying since this all started. It’s hard enough being a working breastfeeding mom and this is how they treat us.

This harrassment was completely uncalled for. I am shocked and offended because if this happened to Katie it has probably happened before and will happen again. Will it be me next time? Could it be you? The TSA needs to issue an apology and educate their employees on proper breastmilk screening. On behalf of all breastfeeding mothers, let’s share this brave woman’s story and raise awareness of this injustice.

Here are the TSA guidelines for traveling with breastmilk, formula or juice for an infant: http://www.tsa.gov/traveling-formula-breast-milk-and-juice

Have you ever encountered problems taking breastmilk through security? How else can we stand by this mom and spread her story to get her the apology she deserves?
